With its full 360° horizontal and 26.8° vertical field of view and an update frequency of 10Hz, the Velodyne HDL-64 provides a perception ideally suited to navigation also at high speeds. Due to the large amount of up to 2-2*10^6 (HDL-64) or 0.7*10^6 (HDL-32) 3D points per second, both HD-LIDAR sensors give a precise picture of the environment, for both static and dynamic aspects.

The smaller HDL-32E has only half the number of lasers, but provided a wider vertical field of view, covering 40°. Version 2.0 of the sensor measures true material reflectivity, independent of laser power or of the distance to the target. Calibration of all reflectivity values is done using commercially available standards. For ease of configuration of the sensor, Version 2.0 of the HDL-32 now runs a web server which provides a graphical user interface (GUI) for setting parameters, to setup the network configuration (IP-Adress, Gateway, subnet mask) and to apply firmware updates.

The new VLP-16 puck sensor is smaller still, vastly more cost-effective and developed with mass production in mind. At the same time, it retains the key features of Velodyne’s breakthroughs in LiDAR: "Real-time, 360 degrees, 3D distance and calibrated reflectivity measurements." The VLP-16 covers a vertical field-of-view of +/- 15 degrees, gives 300,000 points per second, has a low power consumption (<10W), light weight (about 800 grams) and a very compact footprint (100mm diameter, 65mm height).

For synchronization with other sensors, all data is time-stamped with GPS times. The appropriate GPS receiver is part of every Velodyne HDL-64 and HDL-32 LiDAR.
